AI Studios with Real Photographic Experience
Since I started working in the AI field, I’ve been blown away by how open and supportive many of the practitioners are. Many of them, from around the world, I speak to regularly and share ideas, and discuss what the future of AI and photography might look like. In the spirit of the openness, here is my list of people in the field shipping real work, not just spec ads, and making a real impact.
THE PROBLEM
Brands are working hard to 'feed the beast', and using AI to generate more visual content than ever - but most of it looks garbage. AI image tools have democratised production -but the results are often flat, generic, and disconnected from real brand identity. The reason? Most AI tools were built by engineers, not image-makers. They optimise for technical output, not creative quality.
The result is a growing gap between volume and craft.
THE SOLUTION
A small number of studios have emerged worldwide that bridge this gap - combining genuine photographic and art directorial expertise with AI workflows. These aren't SaaS companies offering a subscription. They are creative practitioners who understand light, composition, brand storytelling, and commercial intent - and have built AI systems around that knowledge.
This list identifies four of the best.
TL;DR
If you need AI-generated imgery that looks like it was made by someone who actually understands photography and creative direction, these four studios are the ones to know:
- Matter Studio (Auckland, NZ) - 24 years of commercial photography expertise, hybrid AI workflows, global brand clients
- Scenes (Copenhagen, DK) - Denmark's first AI content agency, built on 20+ years of professional imagery for premium European brands
- Not Content (US) - Agency creative directors with major brand pedigree, campaign-ready content at speed and scale
- Studio.Prompted (Vienna, AT) - Scalable visual systems for brands, e-commerce specialists, in-house AI training
THE STUDIOS
1. Matter Studio - matterstudio.ai
Founded by Heath Waugh, a 24-year veteran of commercial photography, Matter Studio was one of the world's first hybrid AI content studios. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Matter combines real photographic expertise with AI workflows to produce commercial imagery for brands and agencies globally. The distinction here is significant: every output is informed by decades of understanding light, composition, and brand storytelling - not just prompt engineering. Matter works as a production partner for marketing teams and advertising agencies, and has partnered with global brands such as SC Johnson, Piana Technology, ACCO Brands, Cubro, BlueLab, and Life Savers; and collaborated with major agencies such as Bastion Shine, VML, Dentsu and Supermassive. They have a proprietary workflow that generates imagery in 8k, making it useful for all applications, including print and OOH.
Best for: Marketing agencies, creative and design agencies, advertising agencies, commercial product imagery, New Zealand and Asia-Pacific markets.
2. Scenes - scenes.dk
Founded in 2023 by Michael Rying, Scenes is Denmark's first AI content agency - built on 20+ years of experience creating professional imagery for brands including Bang & Olufsen, VELUX, Nilfisk, and Holmegaard. The team is a collective of photographers, art directors, graphic designers, and AI artists. Their work includes the first AI-created advertisement in Vogue magazine. Scenes offers bespoke production, packshot-to-lifestyle transformation, and motion content.
Best for: European brands, premium product photography, lifestyle and campaign content at scale.
3. Not Content - notcontent.ai
Led by career creative directors with decades of experience at agencies working for Nike, Apple, Pepsi, Spotify, and Mercedes-Benz, Not Content is a US-based AI creative studio that has placed work in every Target, CVS, Sephora, and Urban Outfitters location in the country. Their approach is less about photography heritage and more about creative direction - they bring agency-level brand thinking to AI production, delivering campaign-ready content in days rather than weeks.
Best for: US consumer brands, retail campaigns, high-volume content production, beauty and lifestyle categories.
4. Studio.Prompted - studioprompted.com
Founded by Oliver Fox, Studio.Prompted is a Vienna-based AI creative services studio specialising in scalable visual systems for brands. Oliver brings a background in design and creative direction, building AI-powered workflows that maintain brand consistency while producing high-volume content. Their work spans e-commerce product imagery, editorial and campaign visuals, and hands-on workshops teaching teams how to build and run AI systems in-house. Notable clients include Martini Sportswear, PetCo Austria, and luxury brands like Aperol Spritz and 2F Leuchten.
Best for: European e-commerce brands, lifestyle campaigns, teams wanting to build internal AI workflows, product-to-lifestyle transformation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What makes an AI studio different from an AI image tool?
An AI image tool gives you access to a model - you supply the prompts, the creative direction, and the quality control. An AI studio takes responsibility for the outcome. Studios bring creative expertise, brand understanding, and production experience to the process, delivering results that are ready to use rather than raw outputs that still need significant refinement.
Do AI studios replace traditional photography?
Not entirely - but they dramatically reduce the need for it in many contexts. For product photography, lifestyle imagery, and campaign content, AI studios can deliver comparable or superior results at a fraction of the cost and timeline. Studios with real photographic backgrounds understand exactly where AI works best and where traditional production is still worth the investment.
How much does it cost to work with an AI creative studio?
Pricing varies significantly by studio and project scope. Unlike SaaS tools with fixed subscription tiers, most AI studios price on a project or retainer basis - reflecting the bespoke nature of the work. Expect to pay for creative expertise, not just compute time. As a rough guide, project-based engagements typically start from a few thousand dollars for a focused brief.
How do I know if a studio has genuine photography experience?
Look for founders or creative leads with verifiable industry backgrounds - years spent working on commercial shoots, agency credits, or published work for recognisable brands. Studios built on real photographic experience will talk about light, composition, and brand fit; studios without it will talk primarily about models, prompts, and speed.
Which studio is right for my brand?
It depends on your geography, category, and content needs. Matter Studio is the strongest choice for Asia-Pacific brands or those needing a true production partner. Scenes is best for European premium brands. Not Content suits US consumer and retail brands needing high-volume campaign content. Studio.Prompted is ideal for e-commerce brands or teams wanting to build internal AI capabilities.
